Jose Marti- The chase against Jose Marti could be described as ruthless, about his preparations, movements, where he hid, whom he met with and even the strategic and tactical plan he undertook for the great war.
The espionage was unleashed very early by the Spanish colonialist to subdue Cuba, control it and plunder it, of course, Jose Marti, the Delegate, knew beforehand the risks both in exile and in the interior of his Homeland, but the most curious thing was that these diabolical seeds constituted the basis for the creation -years later- of the CIA, although it is qualified as an early species of «German Gestapo».
The Young Jose Marti
Nydia Sarabia researched and wrote how from the bosom of the United States the Cuban independence cause was boycotted in 1880, of course, Marti was not only followed by the gringos, because the Spanish colony never believed that the genius, the thinker, the soul of the Cuban resistance, would stay still out of his beloved Cuba.
What is most striking is that not only Marti had the secret services behind him, very close behind his back, but also other Cuban patriots in emigration.
From New York to Key West the enemies focused more on Cuban patriots, especially those involved or related to the independence ideas of October 10th or the Little War.
Marti in Cuba Now
The Pinkertons were always very persistent, sometimes very tenacious, however, there is no doubt that Martí was aware that he was being watched by spies, detectives, agents, informers who were bribed by paying large sums of money to know the whereabouts of the leader of the Cubans.
Jose Marti was in the sights of espionage, both from Washington, Havana and Madrid, because the Delegate very early outstood for his intelligence, leadership, thought, culture and vision, as confirmed by Ibrahim Hidalgo, PhD and researcher of the Center for Marti Studies, member of the Academy of History of Cuba.
Against our National Hero the espionage order was very clear and full of hate: «We will never sleep»; but Martí mocked many times the «experts» of the Pinkerton and Davie’s agencies. Add those treacherous Cubans and Spanish diplomats, irritated by the light of the one who later became the Apostle.
In spite of the direct espionage against his person, Jose Marti evaded persecution, never abandoned journalism, nor poetic production, much less proselytism and other actions abroad, for the beginning and development of the necessary war, he even attended Washington as Uruguay’s representative to the American International Monetary Conference of 1891.
In the entrails of the monster it was well known who was that 38 year old man who was called The Delegate, today our eternal National Hero.
