TVsantiago’s Response to the Hurricane Season

By: Santiago Romero
There are some entities in Santiago de Cuba to immediately mobilize as soon as there is a hint of the new hurricane season.

The local channel tvsantiago, CMKC, Radio Revolucion, the doyenne radio station of eastern Cuba and matrix of the radio network in the province of Santiago de Cuba, the Sierra Maestra newspaper, official organ of the provincial party committee and the Branch Station of the Institute of Meteorology of the CITMA Delegation (Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment).

In the provincial context, the innate responsibility to inform and to do it on time and well is assumed, thanks to previous decisions in team work, editorial shifts, in the case of Meteorology, constant vigilance in coordination with the specialists of the Central Meteorological Office who consult many times during the day with the colleagues of the National Institute and have a fixed space in the news and an open line in the programming in the event of any cyclone or hurricane.

The Civil Defense counts on the leading role of the local channel tvsantiago, above all, in this new cyclonic season extended from June 1st until November 30th, when a significant change of the weather is predicted, for example: hurricanes in the Atlantic, between 17 and 25 storms, winds of 63 kilometers per hour (as also corroborated by the Climate Prediction Center of the United States, which is part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration).

And it is that the people of Santiago always go directly to the consultation with the weather reports by tvsantiago, and the measures previously applied, this time, before a 85 % of possibilities of strong hurricanes in this season, a period that is considered as one of the most active seasons of the last years.

This is due to record ocean temperatures in the Atlantic Ocean, the impact of the ‘La Niña’ phenomenon in the Pacific, the reduction of trade winds in the Caribbean Sea (and in the Atlantic) and a lower wind shear.

The most extraordinary example was shown by tvsantiago in the proximity, in the midst of the course and development of Hurricane Sandy in the early hours of Thursday, October 25, 2012. The stoicism of the unforgettable broadcaster and producer Ado Sanz in direct transmission for Tele Turquino (tvsantiago) and Cubavisión’s special programming is still being commented in Santiago de Cuba.

Colleagues of the television newscast (tvsantiago) and its digital platforms in networks and this website up to date, minute by minute, with the news from the command post of the civil defense, such as the weather reports and the most complicated situation in the municipality of Guamá and Santiago de Cuba, where El Leñador Sandy or the Storm of the Century took a very different course from the south to the north-east with a perfect and deadly vertical course.

History shows the capacity in prevention, at least, to minimize the negative impact of heavy rains, floods or strong winds, that is why tv Santiago retakes its experiences and refocuses the informative spectrum in this new 2024 hurricane season, whose hurricanes already have names, but their stories are yet to be told.
